It depends on the barn style.

  • Shed row barns and run in sheds.
These barns are built on pressure-treated base rails and are designed to sit directly on a level surface. While a foundation is not required, a compacted gravel pad is strongly recommended for drainage and stability.
  • Modular barns
Modular center aisle barns and larger designs require concrete piers or a full concrete pad. This ensures the structure is properly supported and leveled for long-term performance.

If you are unsure what your barn needs, we can help you determine the best foundation for your property.

Wood barns are preferred for several reasons:

  • Safer for horses
  • More impact-resistant
  • Less likely to dent or puncture from kicks
  • Better insulation and temperature control
  • Warmer, more traditional appearance

A wooden barn provides both safety and comfort, which is why many equine professionals consider it the best choice.

Stalls do not include built-in floors. This is intentional because horses do best on a base that drains well and provides natural comfort.

The tack room comes standard with a plywood floor, and pressure-treated floor upgrades are available.

Most barn owners prepare stall floors using:

  • A level gravel pad
  • Stone dust, sand, or clay
  • Rubber stall mats are placed on top

This combination offers excellent drainage and a comfortable surface for horses.

For best results, we recommend preparing a compacted gravel pad before delivery. After the barn is set in place, many owners install:

  • A few inches of stone dust, screenings, or sand
  • Heavy-duty rubber mats

This creates a dry, safe, and low-maintenance flooring system.
